Dave Hinners — First Officer at the Wichita Massacre | Part 1
In December 2000, the Wichita Massacre left five people dead and one survivor. Dave Hinners was the officer who stayed with her all night.
Hinners was not quite three years on the job with the Wichita Police Department when a 911 call came in that changed three times in about a minute: an assault, then a stabbing, then a shooting. The young woman at the door had walked about a mile through the snow with a gunshot wound to the back of her head. A plastic hair clip had deflected the bullet just enough to save her life.
He followed her to the hospital, and she never stopped talking. He calls her the best witness he has ever had. She knew she was the only one who survived, and the only one who could solve the case. Hinners filled a case book with her account, relayed descriptions of both suspects and a stolen pickup truck, and stayed with her until he was relieved the next morning.
Host Craig Floyd reads the names of the victims: Brad Heyka, Heather Muller, Aaron Sander, Jason Befort and Ann Walenta. Hinners explains how an off-duty partner with a broken hand wrote the stolen-truck report from the hospital, and how a 911 call about a man dragging a big-screen TV across a parking lot led to the first arrest.
In Part 2: how the second brother was found, the survivor's testimony at trial, and why Hinners calls this case one of his demons.
