Wichita Massacre: The Arrests, the Trial and the First Officer | Part 2
Part 2 of the Wichita Massacre, told by the first officer on scene. How both brothers were caught, and what the case still costs him.
Dave Hinners was the Wichita patrol officer who stayed with the lone survivor through the night in December 2000. In Part 2 he explains how both suspects were in custody within 24 hours: the first after a 911 call about a man dragging a TV across an apartment parking lot, the second after his own girlfriend recognized him and made a phone call. (Part 1 linked below.)
He describes the trial, where the survivor testified the way she had talked to him in the emergency room: strong, credible and unafraid. He explains why he chose not to speak with her again before he took the stand, and why he still thinks about her. Without her, he says, the case would have come down to another witness or DNA, and it would not have been as fast.
Then the question every officer gets asked: what did it cost him? Hinners calls the case one of his demons. He talks about going back on shift after an hour and a half of sleep, the stress debriefings his department offered, and why officers have to talk about what they carry instead of locking it away.
Today he leads the United States Deputy Sheriff's Association, which provides free training and safety equipment to underfunded agencies. Host Craig Floyd serves on its board.
